The Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (FFHL) announces the retirement of Fr. Peter F. Vasko, who has served as founding president for 30 years. As we honor Fr. Vasko’s significant contributions to maintaining a strong Christian presence in the Holy Land, we also welcome Fr. John Puodziunas, OFM, who steps into the role of president, effective September 2024.
Fr. Vasko’s life has been guided by deep dedication and a clear sense of purpose. Before entering the priesthood, he built a successful career in business and public relations. However, he felt a spiritual emptiness in his life and sought a more meaningful path. This desire led him to leave his life in the United States and serve as a Franciscan priest in the Holy Land, where he has made a lasting impact on countless lives.
In 1994, Fr. Vasko founded FFHL to address the needs of marginalized Christian youth. Recognizing the challenges faced by young Christians in the region, he worked tirelessly to create opportunities for them through education and scholarships. His efforts have encouraged many to pursue their studies and build better futures.
Fr. Vasko often said, “My work with FFHL has been about giving back, finding daily opportunities to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
One of Fr. Peter’s notable contributions is his leadership in guiding pilgrimages through the Holy Land. These journeys offered pilgrims a chance to deepen their spiritual connection as they followed in the footsteps of Christ. His extensive knowledge of the land enabled him to create meaningful experiences for those seeking to connect with their faith.
Throughout his years at FFHL, Fr. Vasko remained committed to supporting the Living Stones of the Holy Land. He advocated for the preservation of Christian heritage so future generations can maintain their cultural identity. His leadership not only provided immediate support but also laid the groundwork for ongoing assistance to Christian families in the region.
As we celebrate Fr. Vasko’s decades of leadership and service, we also look forward to Fr. John Puodziunas stepping into his new role as president of FFHL. Fr. John is well-prepared to continue the mission of FFHL and carry forward Fr. Vasko’s legacy. He has a strong passion for serving the Christian community and a deep understanding of the challenges they face.
Fr. John’s vision includes expanding educational opportunities and enhancing support for Christian families in the Holy Land. His goal is to continue bringing different religious culture together through community engagement and continuing FFHL’s work to build positive impact. With his leadership, we are optimistic about the future of FFHL and the Holy Land Christian community it serves.
To honor Fr. Vasko’s legacy, FFHL established The Fr. Peter F. Vasko Pilgrimage Endowment for Clergy. This permanent endowment will provide financial support for religious pilgrimages for parish clergy. By sponsoring clergy to attend pilgrimages with their church communities, this endowment will help strengthen the spiritual life of both clergy and their congregations. Fr. Vasko understands the importance of pilgrimage in growing a deeper faith and community.
Fr. John brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He graduated from Marquette University, where he earned a B.S. in Computational Mathematics and a minor in Philosophy. He later obtained a Master of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. His educational background complements his hands-on experience in parish ministry and education.
Fr. John has served as an associate pastor and pastor in various parishes in the Chicago area and Wisconsin. He has also worked as a visiting priest in Philadelphia, taught at the University of San Diego High School and Cathedral Catholic High School, and served as chaplain at several universities in Wisconsin. His diverse experience equips him with the skills needed to lead FFHL effectively.
As we express our gratitude to Fr. Vasko for his decades of service, we also extend our support to Fr. John as he takes on this important leadership role. Together, they show the importance of servant leadership and a strong commitment to helping the Christian community in the Holy Land.
